An Analysis of the Flashbacks
As of this morning’s episode, I think I’ve been able to piece together what happened 42 years prior to the events of The Legend of Korra.

Well I think it’s cause they’re covering different things. Toph is talking about earthbending in general and Bolin was giving tips on how to survive in the probending arena since he sees that Korra already knows how to earthbend.
I still want to see Bolin learning proper earthbending though, because Bolin still doesn’t come across as an earthbender to me; not yet. All he knows is what’s in the ring, it doesn’t do much good outside, y’know? I just really want to see him doing it properly, and what makes it more interesting, is that he’s teaching Korra this ‘new’ style, so she’ll end up getting confused. I mean, it’s obvious that Korra’s got more strength while earthbending than Bolin does (not just ‘cause she’s the Avatar though), she comes across as more stubborn, and hard headed than he does. Frig, I’m just excited for all these possibilities!

Put yourself in Toph’s place at this moment. The only thing she is touching — the only thing she is holding onto — is Sokka’s hand. That’s all. She can feel the wind and hear the yelling, but she can’t see any of it. Her world is the world she feels through her surroundings, but right now she can only feel Sokka. So her world is Sokka’s hand, and it’s slipping away.
